in  qualities  shining  in  splendid  chiaroscuro

from the edition of 1795-1803 as the only equal-sized engravings besides Hogarth’s original edition, also meeting with approval by a contemporary connoisseur as Maximilian Speck von Sternburg. For the common market in 1806-09 Cook let follow an edition of smaller format, partly worked together with his son, which, even though the one or other point could only be suggested anymore, leaves nothing to be desired in wealth of detail.

and friend of Gottfried August Bürger’s, from 1794-1835, not least for being in the original direction partly even preferred to Hogarth’s own engravings, to which

Lichtenberg’s  texts  becoming  part  of  the  immortal  Hogarth

were added as well as sheets from numerous other editions of medium and smaller size including lithographs with in most cases extensive German caption à la Lichtenberg.
