from the edition of 1795-1803 as the only equal-sized engravings besides Hogarth’s original edition, also meeting with approval by a contemporary connoisseur as Maximilian Speck von Sternburg. For the common market in 1806-09 Cook let follow an edition of smaller format, partly worked together with his son, which, even though the one or other point could only be suggested anymore, leaves nothing to be desired in wealth of detail.

“ Farewell , great Painter of Mankind !
Who reach’d the noblest point of Art ,
Whose pictured Morals charm the Mind ,
And through the Eye correct the Heart .
“ If genius fire thee , Reader , stay ;
If Nature touch thee , drop a tear ;
If neither move thee , turn away ,
For Hogarth’s honour’d dust lies here . ”

“ It came! My plate [already documented as lost] was delivered and it is in excellent condition. I cannot explain all of the delays or what happened. It is in the original packaging that you described and it was delivered by DHL, not the postal service (as far as I can tell – it was left on the porch [!!]). So thank you and so glad that this long story has such a nice ending. It was nice dealing with you, thank you for the plate! ”
