Always also a prime address for

Besides Hogarth’s own works
and those by the engravers employed by him resp. i. a.
Thomas Cook’s
c. 1744 – London 1818
– “ made his mark as Hogarth engraver , too ” –
(Thieme-Becker)
first-class representations
in qualities shining in splendid chiaroscuro
from the edition of 1795-1803 as the only equal-sized engravings besides Hogarth’s original edition, also meeting with approval by a contemporary connoisseur as Maximilian Speck von Sternburg. For the common market Cook let follow an edition of smaller format, partly worked together with his son, in 1806-09.
Further the very popular etchings by the engraver of the university at Göttingen
Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen
1765 Göttingen 1840
Hogarth engraver of standing
and friend of Gottfried August Bürger’s, from 1794-1835, not least for their side-correctness partly even preferred to Hogarth’s own engravings, to which
Lichtenberg’s texts becoming part of the immortal Hogarth
were added as well as sheets from numerous other editions of medium and smaller size including lithographs with in most cases extensive German subtext à la Lichtenberg.
“ Farewell, great Painter of Mankind!
Who reach’d the noblest point of Art,
Whose pictured Morals charm the Mind,
And through the Eye correct the Heart.
“ If genius fire thee, Reader, stay;
If Nature touch thee, drop a tear;
If neither move thee, turn away,
For Hogarth’s honour’d dust lies here. ”
Garrick’s epitaph to Hogarth
as the great actor’s reverence for the brother in mind
