Hogarth, William (1697 London 1764). The Mystery of Masonry brought to Light by the Gormagons (Society). The annual procession of the London Freemasons which used to be not allowed to go through Temple Bar as even the king had to obtain permission for by the Lord-Mayor. Engraving by Thomas Cook (c. 1744 – London 1818). Inscribed: Hogarth pinxt. / T. Cook sculpt. / Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, & Orme, May 1st. 1809., otherwise as above. Subject size 11.7 x 17 cm.

Model for the parodistic sujet of about 1742 was the painting of the Pekingese Mattchauter, engraved by Ho-ge and sold in London, Paris and Rome. Here then Cook’s – “made his mark as Hogarth engraver, too” (Thieme-Becker) – supposedly first-time representation within the small edition of the years 1806/09 following his folio edition. Marked A to D the leading group is formed by i. a. Chin Quaw-Kypo, 1st Emperor of China, the sage Confucius and the Mandarin Hangchi (D). – Trimmed within the wide white platemark slightly browned in the far areas of two sides.
