Garrick  ist  der  Größte

Die beiden, jeweils zweifach, skizziert an der Meßlatte, davon das jeweils außenstehende Doppel bezeichnet mit „a very short proportion“ (Quin) bzw. „a very tall proportion“. Innerhalb eines eigenh. „ To G H (?) to be left at the Post office at Norwich / HO (?), Siegel / Sr / If the exact Figure of Mr Quin, were to be reduced to the size of the print of Mr Garrick it would seen to be the shortest man of the two, because Mr Garrick is of a taller proportion. / examples … / Let these figures be doubled down so as to be seen but one at once, than let it be ask’d which represents the tallest man. Yours W H. “

„ The Picture from whom the Print in question was taken, was Painted from Mr Garrick big as the life, & was sold for two hundred pounds on account of its Likeness which was the reason it was call’d Mr Garrick in the Character of Richard the 3d – & not any body else “

Letzter Absatz bezieht sich auf Hogarth’s besagtes Öl von ca. 1745, jetzt in der Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (Hogarth-Katalog der Tate Gallery, 1971/72, 123 mit Abb.; „Portraiture and the theatre as a basis for history painting on the grand scale“). Nach diesem dann gedachter Stich, von Hogarth im Juli 1746 gemeinsam mit C. Grignon gefertigt (H.-Katalog Zürich, 1983, 73 m. Abb.; siehe die hiesige Pos. 7.816).

Zu Hogarth’s im Brief zum Ausdruck kommender Stolz ob der guten Bezahlung des Öls heißt es im Tate Katalog :

„ The price of £ 200 paid by Mr Duncombe, who commissioned the picture, remained a matter of pride to the painter. “

Sehr selten. – Cook „machte sich auch einen Namen als Hogarth-Stecher“ (Thieme-Becker). – Drei vertikale Falten innerhalb des Stiches, zudem rechts ab weißem Plattenrand mehrfach schwach faltig. Unter Glas nur noch bedingt freudemindernd. – Der weiße Oberrand schwach braunstreifig und gesamthaft nicht absolut frisch.
